For Frank Waters
by Victor di Suvero June 9, 1995
Whirr of wings -- the eagle has flown from the peak.
Quiet time -- easy -- the hunter has gone beyond.
The one who opened the way for us to seek,
To learn, to uncover and to know, is gone.
Our guide has gone to his rest.
For so long he taught us all with his way of knowing,
Made it all come to life: the river's courses,
The sacred mountains, and all the different ways
Of being part of the spirit world; he knew.
Our guide has gone to his rest.
We can see his eye still fixed on the far horizon line
Beyond which all the secrets are hidden, the ones
He would find to bring to us. He taught us it was
All one. The deer, the hunter, the lake, the sky.
Our guide has gone to his rest.
Seeker and Teacher, Seer and Friend, touching it all.
Busy writing it down for our children's children in time
And for us -- our world better because of him -- our
Time, our lives and our understanding better as well.
Our guide has gone to his rest.
Yes -- it is a mournful Spring for us. He is gone!
But how much more joyful because he was here!
